Will Dogs Die From Eating Chocolate?
There are many, many, many wives tales and folk lores that still linger amongst dog owners. I base all of my knowledge on fact so I’m pleased to answer this very common question here.
Chocolate can be extremely toxic to dogs. Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which cannot be metabolized readily by most dogs. Cooking chocolate has the highest concentration of theobromine, and is therefore more dangerous than semi-sweet dark chocolate which is in turn more dangerous than milk chocolate. So even if your dog ate a few Smarties or a couple of squares of your Dairy Milk and was okay, that doesn’t mean he can eat an entire bar or a batch of homemade brownies and survive. Symptoms of chocolate toxicity may include some or all of the following symptoms: moderate to severe vomiting or diarrhoea, excitability and nervousness, muscle tremors and/or seizures and heart failure (which obviously leads to death).
If your dog ingests chocolate, call your veterinarian immediately. Let them know what happened and exactly what symptoms your pet is experiencing. Make sure they have plenty of fresh drinking water available.
